What Are Nicotine Salts?
Although still in its infancy, the vapor industry has seen massive changes and improvements in both hardware and e-liquid through the years. When the industry began, devices did not have the power they do today and devices required a thinner viscosity e-liquid to work properly. To accommodate this, e-liquids were made with a high PG (Propylene Glycol) to VG (Vegetable Glycerine) ratio. Prior to 2014, liquids had as much as an 80/20 PG to VG mix. Over just a few short years, wattage increased, as did the size of coils and wicking material. With devices operating at a much higher temperature the demand for higher burning e-liquids was created. VG has a much higher boiling point than PG and these are the reasons many e-liquids today are produced with a 70/30, or even 80/20 VG to PG ratio. Research and development in this industry never sleeps and because of experiments performed at Pax Labs the newest trend to take over the vaping world could be nicotine salt e-liquids.
The nicotine that is added to most e-liquids is called “freebase” nicotine. It has that name because chemically it is not bonded to anything else. This has generally been considered the preferred form of nicotine for vaping. The research conducted by Pax Labs found that specific nicotine salts appear to work better than freebase nicotine in e-liquid. By adding benzoic acid, the chemistry of the nicotine is changed. The pH is lower than other e-liquids and users of nicotine salt e-liquid find vaping it less harsh and can tolerate higher levels of nicotine.
The higher levels and changed chemistry of nicotine salts can benefit the user in many ways. The higher levels of nicotine in nic salt e-liquids mean your body will consume more nicotine than by using non-salt liquids and in a quicker manner. With nicotine levels as high as 50 mg/mL, a nicotine salt user will consume the same amount of nicotine in a fraction of the inhales. When vaping salt liquids there is no need to invest in a high-power device. These liquids were designed to be used in low-power devices, like the Ghost Pod System.
Nicotine salt e-liquids are gaining popularity daily. More lines are being introduced and salt lines are offering lower nicotine level e-liquids to meet with consumer demands. Even though they are gaining in popularity, nic salts are not the e-liquid for everyone. Those that enjoy producing huge clouds of vapor or those that prefer low doses of nicotine will not be happy with nic salts. Those that find the throat hit from e-liquid too harsh and those that want to use a small device, these e-liquids could be the perfect match.
